Nathan Manske is from Driftwood, a small town in Texas.
He was inspired by a Harvey Milk picture of this famous first openly gay elected official in the country who is riding in a car in a parade touting “I’m From Woodmere, N.Y.”
Nathan says, “It meant that there are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people in every small town and every big city across America and the world. I was thinking about that photo the morning after watching Milk, the biopic of Harvey Milk written by Dustin Lance Black. Harvey’s from Woodmere, New York; I’m from Driftwood, Texas.”
And then, Nathan launched his “I’m From Driftwood” campaign in March of 2009. I remember reading about it, and how the stories of all the LGBTQ people throughout the world are being shared through the website and the stories he collected.
I’m from Hollywood. Yeah, I was born in Baltimore, I came out in Clearwater, but I have lived in Hollywood, California for more than half of my life, and more than anywhere else I’ve ever lived. This is where I’m from.
Of course, it’s edited, but it’s six minutes of very personal stuff. John’s in it, so is Donovan, so is the local PTA, so is my old girlfriend, “The Bisexual’s Guide to the Universe,” my parents, “Laugh-In” and Phil Donahue.
The stories are amazing, real, and honest. They’ll make you laugh, cry and maybe think differently about different people, and maybe you’ll identify with someone in there (I’m sure you will):
I was honored to be filmed by Graham Kolbeins and I was interviewed by Michael Lucid. They put together many many stories and made it somehow lucid and interesting. I hope you’ll watch my story, even if you think you know me well.
Today I’m featured on the front page of “I’m From Driftwood” and I’m even more honored. Thank you Nathan.
And, I hope you’ll watch many of the other amazing stories.
